I haven't tried to use pyspeckit or specutils for my needs, but I wrote pyDIS to address easier reduction of 1-D spectra for the APO 3.5m workhorse spectrograph (DIS).
I'm not sure if there are reduction guides for raw data -> ready-to-analyze spectrum for those other packages, but I've been working to create one for pyDIS on the GitHub wiki. I'm trying to make pyDIS as hands-free as possible, aiming to use it for on-the-fly reduction while observing, but young spectroscopists need to reduce data manually.
The classic (early 1990's) IRAF guides are still some of the best cookbooks for reducing 1-d spectra, but I'd love to build new ones for a new generation of spectroscopy tools. I'm not sure there's even a good intro book for CCD Spectroscopy... I had to go back to early IRAF papers/conference proceedings, and think a lot about how DIS is built, to sort out all the details.
